Hot vs. cold composting

Fast and active, or slow and easy.

5 min read

Both work. The difference is effort and speed.

Hot composting

  • Build a large pile all at once with the right mix
  • Turn it often
  • It can heat to around 130 to 160°F
  • Can be ready in a few months

Cold composting

  • Add materials as you have them
  • Turn occasionally or not at all
  • Takes six months to a year or more
  • Doesn't get hot enough to kill most weed seeds
