Greens and browns

The balance that makes it work.

5 min read

Compost needs a mix of nitrogen-rich greens and carbon-rich browns.

Greens

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Coffee grounds
  • Fresh grass clippings
  • Plant trimmings

Browns

  • Dry leaves
  • Shredded plain cardboard and paper
  • Straw
  • Wood chips and sawdust from untreated wood

The mix

A common starting point is about 2 to 3 parts browns to 1 part greens by volume. Too wet and smelly? Add browns. Too dry and slow? Add greens and water.
