Composting in winter

Slower, but keep adding.

4 min read

Compost piles slow down in cold weather, but you can keep adding scraps all winter.

Tips

  • Keep adding scraps; they'll break down when it warms up
  • Stockpile dry leaves in fall to cover winter scraps
  • A larger pile holds heat better
  • Insulate with straw bales or leaves around the bin
  • Bring worm bins indoors or into a garage that stays above freezing
